Weekly Interesting

Guess who is going to a Movnat clinic this July 6th-10th? Me. And I'm super excited! We'd love to get an NYC group together to go to this, so if you are interested, let us know at the meetup. If you don't know who Erwan is, check out his website and this excellent Men's Health article.

Playgrounds: Waaaaaay too dangerous for our precious children. You wouldn't want children to actually be outside moving around instead of sitting inside doing test prep anyway.

It's going to be awesome!

It's going to be awesome! Sorry I'll miss you as I'm doing a later course, but stoked you will be there!

Envy you the MovNat clinic.

Envy you the MovNat clinic. I'd love to do one (esp as Summersville is an hour away from me), but I'm still in the process of learning to swim. Ah, next year, next year.

What makes you think that

What makes you think that fish oil obtained by eating fish in 2010 have any less PCBs than fish oil in a pill?

Depends on the fish and where

Depends on the fish and where it is from.

With either oil or seafood...caveat emptor

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!! I want

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!! I want to try MovNat SO badly!! If I wasn't already working for my German studies next year, I would totally be down for this. Can't wait to hear how it goes! Have fun, Melissa. :)

Some people with inflammation

Some people with inflammation diseases may need fish oil above and beyond daily fish consumption. (And some of us who still eat way too many seeds and nuts may need some. Also, some grass-fed meats like bison have a 4:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio.)

The thing to look for is third-party testing. That's why I don't use Carson fish oil, even though lots of folks recommend it, but I do use Nordic Naturals.

There is a study out, though, that shows that fish oil from supplements is only half as effective as an equal amount from an actual fish.

If people are eating a bunch

If people are eating a bunch of nuts and trying to make up for it with fish oil, that's the wrong strategy. I agree with Dr. Kurt at Panu- keep total omega-6 low. Even though bison has a bad ratio, the total percentage PUFA is still very low (less than 2% calories!). If anything, I would think excess fish oil could impair healing, since it is probably oxidized and excess PUFAs (even omega-3) can have a terrible immunosuppressive effect.

My own personal strategy is to mainly eat foods with less than 6% calories from omega-6 and to include at least one seafood meal each day. I sometimes have nuts, but only every couple of days.
