Learn how to use fermentation to get the most out of your food. And Sandor ferments pretty much everything in this book. A huge variety...
Unconventional Exercise
Since we know that exercise is not about weight-loss, but about a life-long health-building habit, it's important to find an exercise that you like. Dance is probably one of the oldest forms of "exercise." Most tribes use it in both religious and mating rituals. Unfortunately, it's hard to know what kind of dance ancient humans practiced since they didn't have Youtube back then. Contemporary anthropologists have recorded instances of tribes dancing all night without food or drink. Sounds familiar.
Ancient tribal dance
I like dance because I love dance music and also because there are so many forms that I can chose from. For example, flexibility and upper-body strength are two of my main concerns lately. Luckily my roommate got something hilarious in her room: a "pole dancing" pole (let's get real, everyone calls i. Haha, no, neither of us make money this way, though it is very sexy. Since it's already there in our apartment I said...why not?
It is very very very difficult. The level of strength and endurance required are pretty astounding. And to really get decent you need to do these super difficult static-holds. Some of them remind me of the stuff we did in my Movnat seminar and are similarly hard on the skin on the back of my knee. Here is a good example of a static hold:
The clothed pole-dancing sport has gained in popularity recently and NYC has several teams and studios with classes. I've also done belly dance, but I really prefer the upper body benefits of pole-dancing.
Pros: Fun, builds ALL your muscles, possible source of income if you get laid off ;)
Cons: Slightly seedy? Cost of equipment ranges from $100-$200.

I have a fitness instructor
I have a fitness instructor at a high school and young girls always ask me, how to get stronger? And i tell them do pole dancing exercises. I know that pole dancing is kind of look down upon when it comes to young teenage girls, but it truly is a great way to work out. My pole dancing, you work out all parts of your body and also improve your agility.
I've started taking
I've started taking Poledancing Classes 1.5 years ago, and I absolutely love it.
The more advanced pole tricks require a lot of strength (especially core-strength), and some can be quite painful (I'm running out of excuses to explain my bruised inner thighs and upper arms...).
oh, and it's not just for girls ;-)

Although I think that pole dancing is a great way to exercise, maybe you should check out indian pole gymnastics. Now that is the way to workout! ;)
I don't think I am brave
I don't think I am brave enough to try that... But I got recently a salsa teaching DVD and try to learn that! I am not that good with dancing, even though I do enjoy the process. Dance is a wonderful thing, matching workout with playfulness and spiritual growth.
Slightly seedy? How about
Slightly seedy? How about really freakin' awesome?
But seriously, I once took some dance lessons to prepare for a wedding--mine. As I recall it was about 12 one-hour sessions over 4 weeks to learn a single dance (foxtrot) for a particular song. Anyone who thinks this is not a workout hasn't tried it. It was quite tiring, and provided that pleasant after-workout sensation each time. Also, If you've ever watched Dancing with the Stars, or something similar, professional dancers are exceptionally fit-looking. I think the men might have to do some additional upper-body work, but the women are just beautifully built.
Melissa, thanks for the great
Melissa, thanks for the great post.
You see, I have never recommended to any girl pole dancing out of fear of being called a perv. However, the truth is that it's probably one of the best activity for women to build strength (for guys too, although, we tend to work on human flags instead. Something about the need to look manly...).
I have read and commented on your paleo hack appetite/strength thread. Have I had known this, I would have told you to go for it (instead of regular strength training).
Plus, I find that strong women are way more cool than skinny/model women!
