Sea Change

Prof Loren Cordain announces a new cookbook and a sea change in his email newsletter:

PB: Do you cross-reference any of your other published work in the cookbook?

LC: The Paleo Diet Cookbook is consistent with most of the work from my prior three books. However, I have completely updated it based upon the most recent scientific evidence. A couple of key points are different from my first book, The Paleo Diet, which was published in 2002. First, I no longer advocate the use of canola oil, for reasons explained in the book, and I have also taken a softer stand on saturated fats based upon my own article on the topic, published in 2006, and available as a free PDF download from my website. Further, I now advocate coconut and coconut oil consumption.

Sounds like the paleo community is coming closer to a tasty consensus.

Hey if he is willing to change his mind in light of new evidence then that shows he is a good scientist and a credible one.

With him writing a forward to Robb's book, which evidently is in favor of sat. fats, it was inevitable for him to come out of the low sat. fat recommendations if he was to stay credible.

It can be hard to admit that you were wrong - I am happy to see that Prof. Cordain had the confidence and honesty to change his position.

Now if only the rest of the scientific community could be as open minded as him.

Cordain has been saying for a while now that he has changed his position on saturated fats. From what I can tell, he still stands by his recommendation for lean meats, but it is in the context of a recommendation to the general public who would likely be eating grain-fed meat, so avoidance of these saturated fats would be advisable. Thankfully he has seen the light with coconut. And death to the evil canola!
